There is something within Ryan's story (this month's cover article) that won't let me go. Surely, there are those that would disqualify Ryan because of what he writes. Maybe some have already answered his question, "Could I Become a Christian," with a thunderous - NO! But what is clear to me is that this is a person who is hearing from God. Someone that the Lord is working within. When did we decide... at least I'll speak for myself... When did I decide that I no longer have to do what Philipians 2 says? Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Maybe that's what is so gripping - hearing from someone who is engaged in this conflict, someone truly working out his own salvation. I hope you've read or will read our cover story this month. Even more, I hope you'll let it in. My sense of what I'm reading is that I am reading the transcript of an unfolding event. Like keeping track of the back and forth action of an intense basketball game through a tiny Internet window with lines of text streaming the play by play. This play by play is the ongoing work of a resurrection. If there is going to be any sort of church 20 years in the future, it will have to be raised from the dead. We will have to be brought to the valley of dry bones like Ezekiel and directed how to raise those destroyed, disassembled pieces from their place of death. There will not be a congregation just sitting in the chairs waiting for a really cool, young pastor to come along and inspire them and teach them and create social programs for them. We are in need of resurrection, and I believe that you have the opportunity to peek into a resurrection in progress. This entire March issue is filled with the sounds of God and work. He is at work, within me and within you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. If you'll contribute your comments and your insight, we'll get to see the Potter's hand forming and shaping you too. You can reach Scott by email at scottjbane@gmail.com |
